Jean Paul Gaultier

Jean Paul Gaultier capped off his legendary career in fashion this evening by showcasing all the reasons why he’s earned his status as an industry icon. The show felt more like a concert-meets-retrospective than a typical catwalk—but when have we ever known Gaultier to be typical?! Convention has never been in this designer’s vocabulary. Whose career has always been about a mix of camp, social commentary, and Couture quality. Tonight’s show that starred Dita Von Teese, Boy George, a slew of supermodels past and present. ALso many more was case in point.

The show‘s 172 look extravaganza began with an angelic babydoll. And transformed into studies of color, uniformity, tribal dress, gender, sexuality, surrealism, and so much more. There were some red carpet standouts, but no intricately embroidered gown would stay top of mind for long when it’s followed by gravity-defying sculptures, a blow up doll as wearable art, a catsuit made of men’s ties, and beyond. For a last hoorah, Gaultier certainly didn’t disappoint; in fact, he gave us enough fashion to enjoy for decades to come.

These may not be your everyday gardener’s hats. But Clare Waight Keller’s starting point for this dreamy collection is majestic flora. From Hubert de Givenchy’s own Clos Fiorentina and beyond. Then, Sometimes, that thought was clear and concise—Kaia Gerber splayed with delicate buds on a voluminous white gown—sometimes it was a wink— silk mikado tailoring, or tulle blooming like a Georgia O’Keefe painting. In mostly white and black, with punctuations of bold blue and marigolds, we’d love to watch this garden grow.
