Stine Goya COPENHAGEN SPRING 2021
This time last year, Stine Goya was having a ball—literally. Her spring 2020 runway show was a loud and fabulous celebration of ballroom culture and the LGBTQ community. It was also a celebration of diversity and inclusion, two subjects that hadn’t received much attention at Copenhagen Fashion Week at that point. The world is a different place in 2020, not only because of the pandemic. But also because of the ongoing social justice uprising. Outrage over the murder of George Floyd was felt around the globe. The last several months have forced the fashion community to slow down. Take stock of how or if we’re using our creativity for good, and to change for the better. Goya had a head start.
The designer opted out of a physical runway show and presented her spring 2021 collection via a House of Goya film. It was shot inside her newly redecorated office; in it several models from last year’s ballroom show, the Danish television personality and activist Amelia Hoy, Stine Goya employees, and other men and women can be seen dancing through the space. No masks were worn on camera. But Goya says that they followed proper COVID-19 safety protocols as mandated in Denmark at the time. And the team wore and handed out masks for a physical open house earlier today.
The new collection, as Goya said on a Zoom call, is about “redefining the feeling of joy through play and experimentation, colors. And through our local community.” Joy and color are two things that Goya specializes in. Particularly happy-inducing were the lime-green jacquard mini with balloon sleeves and the burnout velvet wrap effect dress in a soft lavender. The prints sparked delight too, especially the Matisse-inspired “dancer” print and a wild zebra motif. Goya noted that the new lineup is 50% smaller than usual; she’s tightening her collections in order to be more sustainably conscious. This one includes 10% more sustainable fabrics than her previous outing.
Eco-consciousness is at the forefront of Goya’s push toward change. But she’s also dedicated to “focusing inward on the local community and local talent, and celebrating them on a global scale.” Goya’s clothes are hopeful in and of themselves. If she continues to empower the young, diverse group of creatives around her, the brand should keep dancing toward a hopeful future too.
