Stand STOCKHOLM SPRING 2021 Collection
Stand’s Nellie Kamras hadn’t planned to show her spring 2021 collection. But in a spirit of support for Stockholm’s first digital Fashion Week she joined the lineup. Vogue was invited to a Zoom preview that focused on a selective edit of the racks of clothes that filled the designer’s bright new space. Seeing all of those clothes was a reminder of how many-pronged a designer’s marketing plan must be: Editors, buyers, stylists, and customers have different needs and wants. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, which is something designers need to keep in mind as digital fashion weeks proliferate. Object-led lookbooks and “collection films” offer very different experiences than fashion shows. Which ideally are edited to create a cogent narrative around the clothes.
Some designers like to tell stories; Kamras lets her preferred materials—leather and faux fur. Speak to her as she creates shapes and picks a palette and surface treatments. “An intense grass green” is Stand’s key color for spring, and the shapes and mood are derived from the 1970s, with some Western touches for good fun (see the fringed over-shirts.) “We really tried to make a light spring collection,” says Kamras.,“It’s always challenging when you’re working with leather.” The flou of the silhouettes softened the collection.
There were no risks taken at Stand for spring, but Kamras delivered the great pieces her fans expect and love. The outerwear stood out; rendered in bright colors and interesting textures the coats were fun and with-it, rather than trying to be classic, which was refreshing. The pillowy bags, while desirable, were derivative.
Kamras has a sense of what appeals to a wide range of women, and she was onto something with that ’70s theme, which speaks to the way we’re living now: We want comfort at the same time that we wish to step up our style in ways that Zoom can’t accommodate. “I’ve been wanting to do a ’70s collection for a long time,” the designer said. “I really like [the’70s style] because it’s flattering and it’s feminine, it’s flirty. I don’t really like the word sexy, but I think it’s sexy in the right way, because it’s dressed and it makes you feel good.”
