Emma Roberts shares every step of her beauty routine

Emma Roberts is a familiar face across our cinema and TV screens, with starring turns in Scream Queens, American Horror Story and We Are The Millers to name just a few. In fact, she grew up on film sets, beginning her career at the tender age of nine under the watchful eye of her aunt, Julia Roberts. Now, Emma is the latest celebrity to exclusively share her enviable beauty routine with Bazaar – from her low-maintenance make-up looks to the products that boost her confidence…

I DON’T WEAR A LOT OF MAKE-UP DAY-TO-DAY AS…

“When I was younger, I used to wear a lot of make-up and I always wear it when on set, so it can feel a bit like a costume. That’s why, when I’m not working, I try to avoid wearing much of it and I have a real ‘less is more’ mantra. I couldn’t do without mascara though. I love the Chanel Le Volume De Chanel Mascara. It makes me look so much more awake and I like that the formula is really dark.”

MY ADVICE FOR A PERFECT RED LIP IS…

“A red lip is a commitment. You have to keep it up and you don’t want it to transfer when you are greeting or kissing someone. I like to pre-line my lips with Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat and then use an Armani Lipstick, with a gloss over the top.”

I LOVE FRAGRANCE BECAUSE…

“It’s such a small thing but it makes me feel so confident. It’s a way to look like yourself but feel elevated, so I like something that’s feminine but not too overpowering. As one of the faces of the Boss Alive fragrance, I went around a friend’s house for dinner wearing it and I got so many compliments. I took that as a really good sign that I’d found a scent for me. It’s not too girly, with a hint of vanilla in it.”

MY BIGGEST BEAUTY MISTAKE GROWING UP WAS…

“Definitely the spray tans I had when I was younger. I looked so orange and it just wasn’t natural.” (For spray tanning advice that will give you a healthy-looking glow this summer, we’d recommend listening to the advice of celebrity tanner James Harknett.)

MY SKINCARE FOCUS IS…

“For me, beauty is health, so I really focus on keeping my skin healthy, especially as I have really fair skin. That’s something I’ve learned from my aunt [the actress Julia Roberts]. It starts with always remembering to wash my face. And I like to use a deep-cleaning, make-up melting cleanser.” (Bazaar loves Elemis’ Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm.)

“I follow that with a moisturiser and eye cream as I’m at the age where I’m starting to increasingly think about rejuvenating my skin. I love the Drunk Elephant Eye Cream and the Dr Barbara Sturm product range. Anything with hyaluronic acid in it interests me too, as I like to keep my skin really hydrated. I love masks too, especially exfoliating ones. One of my favourites is Charlotte Tilbury’s Clay Mask.”

FACIALS ARE MY GO-TO BEAUTY TREATMENT BECAUSE…

“I see having a facial as a part of a complete skincare routine – even if it is just a little spa day at my house. Tracie Martyn is a brilliant facialist, as is Melanie Grant, and I love to visit the Biba salon in Los Angeles, too. Every time I go to them, I know that it will be a different experience, depending on what my skin needs.”

GOING BLONDE TAUGHT ME THAT…

“You really need to look after the condition of your hair when changing its colour. The amazing colourist Nikki Lee at 901 Salon in West Hollywood took me from brunette to blonde fairly recently and it took around 10 hours to do it properly, but it was worth the work. I’m now taking hair vitamins and using Olaplex’s conditioning No3 Hair Perfector to keep my hair looking healthy, which is so important when you go blonde.” (Viviscal Supplements are award-winning hair vitamins that Bazaar loves.)

I LOVE TO TRAVEL BECAUSE

“Travelling allows you to be a new version of yourself. It’s about discovery. You get to ask yourself, ‘who are you going to be in this city?’ My first time in Paris with my best friend was a real, ‘we are here’ moment.”

TO KEEP MYSELF LOOKING AND FEELING HEALTHY…

“I love Pilates and try to find balance by eating what I love, but in moderation. I think that is really important.”

MY TRAVEL ESSENTIALS ARE…

“As I’m often travelling, I always keep lip balm with me as my lips get so dry.” (Bazaar recommends Glossier’s Balm Dotcom.) “I also use a lot of face mists, like the Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist, when I’m flying, too.”
