Alberta Ferretti SPRING 2021 READY-TO-WEAR

Alberta Ferretti’s show was staged in the open air in one of the courtyards of Milan’s Castello Sforzesco, with guests enjoying at safe distance a warm, sunny, last-official-day-of-summer afternoon. The same relaxed feel echoed in the collection, which was truer to Ferretti’s signature romantic style than her recent ’80s-inflected outings, where she veered towards an emphatic look rather at odds with her sensibilities.

Speaking on the phone before the show, she reflected: “In this difficult situation, so harsh and unforgiving in many ways, my gut instinct was to embrace kindness and a certain seductive softness. I believe that it stems from self confidence and from the acceptance of the natural power of femininity.” It’s a language in which Ferretti seems to be fluent, as it translated rather well into an appealing repertoire of feminine, flowing muslin dresses, and shorter, more ingénue-ish styles in broderie anglaise or encrustations of macramé lace.

Ferretti’s approach being practical and dictated by her attention to real women’s needs, she also offered plenty of no-nonsense everyday pieces, the so-called ‘wardrobe’ options. Pastel-hued denim was her alternative of choice; high-waisted tight pants were paired with lingerie-inspired bustiers and pretty bralettes. “I was known as the Queen of the Slipdress,” she joked. Probably it’s a crown she’s considering reappropriating. Embroidered shirts with scalloped capelets and cropped blouses with pouf sleeves put the focus on the shoulders—a callback of sorts to her stylistic embrace of the much hyped ‘empowered femininity’ mystique. Yet Ferretti is at her best when she ditches structure in favor of delicacy and finesse. “Romanticism is a manifestation of strength, not of weakness,” she mused. It’s actually quite a good message. She should consider splashing it across her popular t-shirts.
