Rosetta Getty SPRING 2021 READY-TO-WEAR
So there’s been a lot of chitchat lately about how post-pandemic fashion is going to be 100% sweatpants. Which is nonsense. What does seem non-nonsensical is the notion that anxious people—whether self-isolating or not—gravitate toward comfort, and society at large has entered an anxious season likely to carry on for a while. With that in mind, Rosetta Getty oriented her new collection toward comfort, designing exactly zero sweatpants but turning out a solid group of easygoing pieces that, for the most part, would serve equally well whether lounging at home or venturing out for a socially distanced lunch or dinner date.
Getty is hedging her bets, in other words. A pair of skinny scuba double-knit pants, slit at the ankle, have the ease of lockdown leggings, but they’re chic enough for whatever world emerges from the current craziness; ditto a cape-sleeve shift and matching culotte in stretchy camel-colored cady, or an asymmetric color-block tee and mid-calf wrap skirt in ultra-pliant jersey.
The accent on chic feels optimistic—these are clothes for women who haven’t, you know, given up. And there is also something rather dreamy about the diaphanous lingerie-inspired pieces Getty created; mooching around at home can look exceptionally glam, if you’re doing it in Getty’s silk-satin, tie-front maxi dress, the sort of thing you can imagine a Depression-era screwball comedy socialite wearing as she putters about her boudoir.
Good fashion can come out of bad times! And as Getty noted, speaking on the phone today, pandemic restrictions forced her and her team to focus on the essentials—the stuff they do best, the items their customer wants and needs most at this fraught moment in history. That’s a worthwhile exercise in itself.
