In creating the Prada Fall 2020 collection, Miuccia Prada had her mind on power. More specifically, she wanted to take the concept of feminine power and argue that it exists because of the women behind it, not in spite of them.
The result was an innovative show called “Surreal Glamour” that made waves from the moment it hit the runway at Milan Fashion Week earlier today. Guests entered the Fondazione Prada to find that seats were on raised platforms overlooking a pair of fictional courtyards. Providing for a unique, bird’s-eye view of the collection. The show started out with a series of grey, more tailored looks, sticking to some of the shapes that Prada does best in a feminine range of suiting motifs. But despite the practical elements, Miuccia wasn’t afraid to have some fun: the collection made good use of fringe. As the show went on, bright colors and sheer pieces had an increased presence. Fitting right into 2020, many of the looks featured miniature Prada handbags, worn either as necklaces or bracelets.
The show, which counted Kaia Gerber, Gigi Hadid, and Adut Akech among its cast, seemed to build off last season. When each model was the protagonist of her own look, sporting simple pieces that came together to make individualistic statements. This time, it was all about how tailoring and traditionally feminine elements coexist in a single look. And with the mesmerizing colors, fringe, and bags-slash-jewelry, the looks felt right at home in 2020.
It seems fashion is moving away from seasons highlighting a series of uniform trends. Instead emphasizing individualism and a curated wardrobe, which is good news for both self-expression and sustainability. Prada, after all, is part of the Fashion Pact, so it makes sense that the house would be making aesthetic choices to match its efforts to reduce its environmental footprint. So if you were lucky enough to get your hands on one of those Prada water bottles, you now have a whole wardrobe to match. Sounds powerful, indeed.
